The 440th Airlift Wing, based at Pope Air Force Base since 2007, continues to contribute to the local and area economy. When the wing first arrived, the total number of military and civilian staff was 10. The November 2010 economic impact analysis report shows the 440th Airlift Wing now has almost 1,250 Reserve members and more than 230 civilians assigned to the wing.
The annual payroll of military appropriated funds amounts to more than $13 million. The appropriated funds for the civilian workforce are almost $16 million for a total of more than $29 million paid.
The 440th Airlift Wing continues to update and improve many of the facilities, hangars, work centers, materials and equipment. The contracts for locally supplied goods and services add more than $8.5 million.
The report estimates the dollar value of indirect jobs created by the wing’s day-to-day operations at almost $11 million.
The Reserve unit presents stability to the local economy and community. The average Reserve member lives in the local area and works for a local company as a civilian. Historically the 440th Airlift Wing member will stay with the wing for more than 10 to 15 years, and spend their dollars supporting local businesses.
The final total annual economic impact estimate for the 440th Airlift Wing is $48.2 million.
The 440th Airlift Wing is North Carolina’s only Reserve Airlift Wing. The 440th Airlift Wing provides total mission-ready Combat Airlifters and equipment ... anywhere, anytime.
