Fayetteville is known by its many different titles in the military community. In addition to being named as a Soldiers Sanctuary, it has also earned recognition as the city that helps Soldiers save money.
The Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau has created a Web site that features almost every local business that offers discounts to the area’s military members.
The Web site, which can be found at www.visitfayettevillenc.com/militarydiscounts, went online in early December 2009 and according to FACVB officials, it was their way of giving back to the military community.
“A few years ago, we declared Fayetteville a Soldier’s Sanctuary,” explained John Meroski, president and CEO of the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “Cumberland County and Fayetteville have always had a history of helping out its neighbors at Fort Bragg and Pope Air Force Base, but there was never an organized way of doing it. We wanted to be a conduit to find these businesses and provide an organized way to present it to the military community.”
Meroski said he believes the Web site provides a vehicle to inform the military community about the benefits that are available to them. He pointed out that the Web site, which his office began working on early last year, is somewhat of a necessity for Soldiers.
“Recognizing a need for a comprehensive list of businesses that offer discounts to members of the military, the Fayetteville Area Convention and Visitors Bureau started compiling information in the spring of 2009,” Meroski added. “We found nearly 300 businesses that offer a military discount and we’re confident there are others out there.”
He said he was pleased in the bureau’s efforts in providing the list to the military.
“We’re glad to offer this for visitors and residents alike,” he explained. “We’re proud to be able to do this for the military and we’re grateful.
