One of the best ways to combine past volleyball experience with the present is to get a retired warrant officer, who was also a former volleyball official, to officiate during a post volleyball tournament.
The 2nd Battalion, 508 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 2nd Fury, 4th Brigade Combat Team, won the All-American volleyball tournament on May 17, at Hoskins Gym.
David Savage, a retired warrant officer and former volleyball official, served 17 years at Ft. Bragg, spending some of that time as a member of headquarters at 82nd Division and with 82nd Division Artillery. He retired after serving 32 years in the Army. While serving, Savage played recreational volleyball during his free time.
“The volleyball games today are much different from when I played because we played jungle volleyball with no rules,” said Savage.
Savage was able to reconnect with volleyball to officiate the matches between two 4th Brigade Combat Team units. The 2nd Fury was victorious over the 782nd Brigade Support Battalion.
Altogether, the 2nd Fury had three practices together before the championship volleyball matches. This helped the Soldiers reinforce the importance of teamwork.
“We used more teamwork and communication than skill to get the victory,” said Pvt. Brandon P. Licking, a member of 2nd Fury.
