Fine weather, cheerful environment, and smiling faces … nothing could be faulted at the monthly Army Community Service 5K at Fort Bragg on June 25, as more than 350 people showed up for June’s 5K Family Run around Hedrick Stadium held on the last Saturday morning of every month.

Since the run’s debut in March, runners of all ages have spent Saturday mornings at the field below Reilly and Longstreet Roads. The run has attracted mostly casual runners, not those looking to hone their competitive skills. Non-runners also gather at the stadium to pick up some freebies and to cheer on their favorite runners or strollers as they pass by.

Taking in their third run for the year were Spring Lake residents Dave Smith and his wife, Casey, with their three children: Carl, 12, Ashley, 9, and Jenny, 6.

“We all like to be outside and enjoy the sunshine and weather. And the course seemed just right for me and my family. It is a good family activity,” Casey Smith said.

Her husband, a psychologist, agreed. “The thing I like most about this is that it’s not a competitive run, but just a fun run.”

A Fort Bragg ACS representative said that purpose of the event is to enhance fun and fitness of family members around Fort Bragg. Various Army community organizations on post, including Army Wellness Center, set up booths and tables, as a way to distribute information about their programs, along with goodies from a fast food restaurant and some other sponsors.

95th Civil Affairs Brigade’s Equal Opportunity Advisor Master Sgt. Maria Rizzotto and the brigade’s Career Counselor Master Sgt. Joel Lucero were among those welcoming the Hedrick Stadium visitors that Saturday.

Rizzotto distributed information about developing sound family relationships, while Lucero talked to military members who were interested in becoming civil affairs Soldiers.

“Very few Soldiers and Family Members know what civil affairs Soldiers are about,” Lucero said. “So I’ll be here again next month.”

The next run 5K run is July 30, 8 a.m. at Hedrick Stadium.
