KANDAHAR, Afghanistan- An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper was killed in southern Afghanistan, July 19.
Staff Sgt. Brian Piercy, an infantryman with Company A, 2nd Battalion, 508th Parachute Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team was killed by an improvised explosive device during a combat patrol in the Arghandab River Valley.
“Staff Sergeant Piercy was an extraordinary Soldier, friend, mentor and an even better person,” said 1st Lt. Matthew J. Hernandez, his platoon leader. “He always led by example and took care of his men before himself.
He has made a lasting impact on all of us and he will always be remembered.”
The 27-year-old noncommissioned officer was a native of Clovis, Calif. He joined the Army Oct. 19, 2004, and attended One Station Unit Training and Airborne School at Fort Benning, Ga., before arriving at Fort Bragg.
Piercy was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 325th Airborne Infantry Regiment, July 9, 2005, after completing training.
Shortly after Piercy arrived, the battalion was reflagged 2nd Bn., 508th PIR and became part of the newly activated 4th BCT.
Piercy deployed with the unit from February 2007 to April 2008 and stayed on to deploy again in August 2009.
He is survived by his wife Christina, and his parents, Thomas and Carolyn Piercy.
A memorial in his honor will be held in Afghanistan.
