The 2010 Fort Bragg Intramural Soccer League begins play, Aug. 18, at Towle Stadium. Games will take place Monday through Thursday, beginning at 6:30 p.m. According to the sports office, teams can continue to register until Sept. 15.

The Family and Morale, Welfare, and Recreation sports office sponsors unit level soccer at Towle Field, off of Bastogne Road, Monday through Thursday, at 6:30 p.m. Unit level soccer allows different units to come together to play friendly games against each other in hopes to become the next Commanders’ Cup recipient.

According to Kurt Phoenix, a sports specialist and the point of contact for outdoor and indoor soccer, teams looking to play need to be active-duty servicemembers and have a signed memorandum from their commander stating that all players are part of his or her unit.

As of Aug. 18, 10 teams were registered to compete against each other. It is not too late to join in the fun; teams have until Sept. 15 to register for the competition.

The soccer teams are co-ed and must be members of the sponsored unit as a active-duty servicemember. If a servicemember’s unit or higher command does not have a team, they can join another unit’s team after exhausting all efforts to find another units in his or her command.

Teams consist of 11 players or more, but must have at least seven players to play a game or the team will forfeit. If military training interferes with a game, the team’s captain must call Phoenix or the sports office before 2 p.m., the day of the game to schedule another day. If the team fails to notify the sports office of military training, the team will be forced to forfeit the game.

There will be a post championship in mid-October and the first few games count toward placement in the championship. Winner of the soccer championship will count towards the Commanders’ Cup in which soccer, football, softball, and basketball teams compete to earn the most points to have the honor of top unit at Fort Bragg.

For more information and to register, call the sports office at 396-1217 or log onto www.fortbraggmwr.com.
