BAGRAM AIRFIELD, AFGHANISTAN — Servicemembers from all branches of the United States military braved the fall cold of an Afghanistan morning to celebrate the birthday of one of their sister services.
Servicemembers supporting Operation Enduring Freedom ran or walked 5 kilometers on Bagram Airfield Oct. 13 to celebrate the 234th birthday of the United States Navy.
“We’re a combined force and so I’m very honored to be here with my Sailor brothers and sisters,” said Army Chaplain James Watanabe, a chaplain serving in Task Force Lone Star.
Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors and Marines from across Bagram gathered in the early morning light to pick up their numbers and receive a safety brief. Most could see their breath by the light of street lamps illuminating the staging area as they stretched and prepared to run or walk.
“Today we salute our history; we salute the men and women of all ranks and rates that man our ships, keep our planes flying, build and fight, cook and repair, and keep us healthy and safe,” said Navy Capt. Gina Harden, the commanding officer of NAVCENT. “Fate does not knock on everyone’s door, but it is everyone’s duty to answer the call.”
The event was organized by Sailors to honor and celebrate the rich traditions the Navy holds dear and to recognize servicemembers who have pursued excellence in their physical fitness. Runners began their five kilometers and were greeted by the sun rising over mountains surrounding the airfield.
Runners reached the turnaround point and returned to the cheers and encouragement of Servicemembers who had finished before them. Army Capt. Amy Bourie, placed first for women with a time of 20 minutes, 2 seconds. Army Sgt. Brian Butzler, placed first for men with a time of 17 minutes, 8 seconds.
