Maya Black, 17, is a youth volunteer with the Fort Bragg/Pope American Red Cross. The rising freshman at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte said the organization has transformed her from a shy kid to someone with leadership skills.
Black, who served as an ARC vice president and secretary, has volunteered in medical records, obstetrics and gynecology and in the pharmacy at Womack Army Medical Center. An academic scholar, she plans to major in pre-kinesiology to become a pediatric physical therapist when she’s grown.
