Last year, the Fort Bragg Tax Center saved service members, retirees and their dependents over $4.6 million in tax preparer’s fees, said Terry Spearman, site manager, Fort Bragg Tax Center. It is the largest, most productive tax center in the Department of Defense and the tax center with the lowest number of rejected returns.

Active-duty service members, retirees, Reservists and National Guardsmen on active duty for more than 29 days and Reserve and National Guardsmen retirees drawing retirement are eligible to have their taxes completed for free by certified Soldiers at the center.

These Soldiers spend two months in training, complete at least 100 practice tax returns and are certified by the IRS at the advanced level, Spearman said. Six different sets of eyes review each return before submission to the IRS.

“It is important that people understand that tax law is the same no matter where you go,” he said. “There is no need to pay someone when they can get their taxes done for free here and get their refund at the same time.”

There is one important change that affects when some people will receive their refunds this year, said Spearman. The IRS has delayed refunds for individuals or Families claiming the Earned Income Credit or Additional Child Tax Credit until Feb. 15.

This year, the Fort Bragg Tax Center has already processed 1,026 returns with $2,091,256 in refunds as of Jan. 26. It is important that taxpayers bring the following documents when they come to the tax center:

Military Identification Card

W-2s from all jobs

Last year’s tax returns, including state returns

All 1099s

Child care expenses

Educational expenses

Routing and account number for direct deposit of refund

Power of Attorney if filing for another person or filing married without a spouse present

This list is not exhaustive. When in doubt, bring it when filing taxes.

The Fort Bragg Tax Center is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. It is closed on training and federal holidays. Appointments are highly recommended and can be made by calling 396-8299. Taxpayers must arrive by 3 p.m. to have their taxes completed that day.
