Why pay an outside agency to prepare your taxes when you can get the same service for free at the Fort Bragg Tax Center?
The Fort Bragg Tax Center will open Jan. 22, 2014, at 9 a.m. The Tax Center provides free tax preparation, electronic filing, and tax form distribution for federal and all state tax returns.
The Tax Center is located on the 6th floor of the Soldier Support Center (Old Womack) on Normandy Drive. The Tax Center will have dedicated phone numbers beginning Jan. 20. Those numbers are 396-1040 or 396-8299 (TAXX).
The hours of operation are from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., Saturdays, closing on Sundays.
The Tax Center will also close on all major federal holidays but will be open on most training holidays. The Tax Center will be open until midnight, April 14 and 15.
If you visit the Tax Center after 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, or anytime on Saturday, you must enter and exit through the main, canopy covered entrance to the Soldier Support Center. This will be the only entrance open after hours. Also, this will be the only entrance open on Saturdays.
Active-duty servicemembers (including members of the Reserve and National Guard component on active-duty orders for more than 29 days), Family members, and retirees are encouraged to take advantage of the Tax Center.
Assistance is provided by appointment or on a walk-in basis and appointments are highly recommended.
In order to have returns prepared, taxpayers must:
Arrive at the Tax Center no later than one hour prior to closing if you are a walk-in client.
Bring your W2 forms, which can be downloaded from the DFAS MyPay website at https://mypay.dfas.mil. A copy of an LES cannot be used.
Bring your military/dependent/retiree ID card.
Bring a power of attorney if filing for another person or filing “married filing jointly” without your spouse present and any tax forms they have received in the mail.
If you want to receive an expedited refund via direct deposit, you must also bring a canceled check.
The Tax Center cannot prepare or file taxes without this necessary paperwork.
