Deployed service members do not have to miss out on giving their loved ones a surprise for Valentines Day. The Golf Capital Chorus of Pinehurst, North Carolina will offer free singing valentines to loved ones of deployed Soldiers, said Dick Curl, the chorus’ Cupidmeister. The valentines are also available to civilians for $50 and for $40 to non-deployed active-duty service members.

The Golf Capital Chorus specializes in barbershop-style singing. Members show up to sing wearing signature plaid knickers.

In addition to a presentation of two songs, loved ones also receive a rose, a box of candy, a notecard from the sender and Kleenex for the tears, said Curl, a combat veteran who deployed to Korea and Vietnam over a 31-year Army career.

Curl said the singing valentine, a tradition that has been ongoing for more than a decade, is fun, but sometimes involves “bawling.”

“It’s always an emotional thing. Sometimes, we get too choked up to sing right,” he said.

For lead way, the order for a singing valentine must be placed by Feb. 9.

“We’ll need delivery details — who, where, when and contact phone,” Curl said.

The valentine will be delivered at Fort Bragg and in the Cumberland County area on Feb. 12, from 1 to 8 p.m. Outlying areas such as Moore and Hoke counties will receive valentines Feb. 13 and 14, from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m., Curl said.

Chorus members are looking forward to this year’s event, as well as anticipating its return next year.

“We’re spreading a lot of love to people who have devoted their lives to serving their country,” Curl explained.

“Roses may fade but these memories last. And the trail of happiness and love we leave is a terrific thing for us singers.”

To place a singing valentine order, call Curl at 215-9796 or email him at He also wants the community to share his email with deployed service members so they may take advantage of the service.

Proceeds from this year’s orders will be donated to Sandhill Children’s Center, a youth advocate organization with campuses in Rockingham and Southern Pines, North Carolina.
