Male golfers around the Fort Bragg area have the opportunity to join the Fort Bragg Men’s Golf Team at Stryker Golf Course, according to Mike Martin, team captain.

The team is open to men aged 18 years and older who have an established handicap of 18.4 or less in the Golf Handicap and Information Network system.

They are always looking for active-duty service members and Department of Defense ID cardholders interested in competing throughout the season, said Jeff Johnson, director of golf, Stryker Golf Course.

The men’s team competes as part of the Carolinas Golf Association Interclub.

Players will take part in six regular-season home and away matchups against teams from Willow Springs Country Club, Happy Valley Country Club, Lane Tree Country Club and more.

Each match typically costs around $25 and consists of six different matchups, Johnson said. Teams can win a total of four points from each match.

At the end of the regular season, the number of points collected will determine which teams make it to the post-season playoffs.

Last year, the team had 22 members and made it to the semi-finals of the playoffs.

“We had so much fun,” Martin said. “Everyone showed us a great time and thanked us for our service wherever we went, and of course we showed them the same thing when they came here.”

Both Johnson and Martin highlighted the fun of being part of a team.

“Golf is usually an individualized sport, so to be a part of a team is really cool,” Johnson said. “It’s really cool that you all unite under one flag … to oppose other golf courses and beat your chest and say ‘we’ve got better golfers than you do.’ That’s what it’s all about.”
