On Dec. 21, 2013, the world lost a hero. Cpl. Rodolfo “Rudy” Hernandez, recipient of the Medal of Honor, died at Womack Army Medical Center at the age of 82. He was buried Monday at Sandhills State Veterans Cemetery in Spring Lake, N.C. with full military honors and was mourned by hundreds including high ranking military and civic leaders. Fort Bragg and Fort Campbell, Ky., Soldiers were pallbearers. During the Korean War, Hernandez, then a member of Company G, 2nd Battalion, 187th Airborne Regimental Combat Team, although suffering from a potentially mortal head wound and armed with only grenades and a bayonet, single-handedly fought off an attack of superior forces.

On Aug. 6, 2013, Fort Bragg’s Warrior Transition Battalion Complex rededicated the facility to Hernandez.
