Active duty service members assigned to Fort Bragg will compete for the chance to represent the installation at the 8th Annual Fort Bragg Post Intramural Combat Cross Country Meet, Jan. 21. The race will take place at Smith Lake Recreation Area starting at 9 a.m.

The competition is open to men and women, and participants can compete as individuals or as a team. Teams must compete at either the brigade or battalion level with their respective gender. Mixed teams of men and women are not permitted. The course covers 11 miles of trails around the Smith Lake area. Spectators are encouraged to come cheer on participants at the picnic area of Smith Lake Recreation Area, said Theresa Smith, director, Intramural Sports.

Smith said the race will help determine the best of the best at Fort Bragg. “The purpose of the meet is to identify the top ruckers at Fort Bragg and create a men’s and women’s team to represent Fort Bragg at the Bataan Death March in White Sands, New Mexico,” she said.

To ensure fair competition, participants are required to ruck in the following uniform:

»» Army Combat Uniform or equivalent

»» Combat boots

»» Military headgear (may be removed on route)

»» Rucksack weighing 35 pounds

»» Canteen or Camelback filled with water

Awards will be presented to the top five male and female individual finishers as well as members of the first and second place teams in each team division. Smith said that winners will receive a plaque or trophy. Participants and teams must register for the event by Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. Registration is available at Leisure Travel Services. The cost is $10 per person before Jan. 13 and $15 per person after that date. All competitors receive a commemorative Tshirt. Participants are encouraged to attend an organizational meeting at Hercules Physical Fitness Center on Jan. 19 at noon. For more information, call Smith at 396-1218.
