For the fifth year in a row, Elon University is ranked No. 1 in multiple categories in U.S. News & World Report’s 2018 “America’s Best Colleges.”
The guide was released Tuesday, naming Elon the No. 1 Southern master’s-level university along with No. 1 rankings for excellence in undergraduate teaching and innovation.
Contributing to those scores are Elon’s 91 percent first-year student retention rate, an 82 percent four-year graduation rate, a 12-to-1 student faculty ratio and a strong alumni giving rate.
It’s also the only university in the nation recognized for excellence in all eight “programs to look for” categories: study abroad, undergraduate research/creative projects, internships/co-ops, learning communities, service learning, writing in the disciplines, first-year experiences and senior capstone.
This is Elon’s third year of being recognized in all categories — a recognition based on the university’s history of excellence and high participation rates in programs known as “Elon Experiences.”
In the class of 2017, 89 percent of students were involved in service projects, 87 percent were involved in internships, 79 percent were involved in study abroad, 16 percent were involved in Study USA, 45 percent were involved in leadership, and 27 percent were involved in undergraduate research, the university said in a news release Tuesday.
Based on a survey of higher education leaders, Elon was also ranked No. 1 for undergraduate teaching and named a No. 1 innovative school.
Additionally, the university is included in U.S. News’ ranking of the nation’s best undergraduate business programs accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business.
Only seven North Carolina business schools made the list of 183 schools.
U.S. News & World Report’s college rankings are based on data collected from institutions – measuring such things as graduation and retention rates, faculty resources and financial resources – as well as opinion surveys taken by faculty and administrators at each school.
The guide has been produced annually since 1983.
