More than 50 Soldier athletes showcased what they can do as part of the local Warrior Games Trails, Sept. 17 through 21. Wounded, ill and injured Soldiers, past and present, came together and competed to move on to the next round of competition at the regional level.
Events during the competition included cycling, swimming, track and field, sitting volleyball, wheelchair basketball, archery and air rifle/pistol. Each event enabled the athletes to adapt the sport or equipment according to their capabilities or injuries.
Adaptive sports and athletic reconditioning activities play a fundamental role in the recovery, rehabilitation and reintegration of Soldiers whether they are returning to duty or transitioning to civilian life.
The winners from the local trials will move on to regional competition in the next few months. Regional-level winners move onto the culminating stage — the Department of Defense Warrior Games in June. The finals will be held in Colorado Springs, Colorado and are free and open to the public.
