Second Assault Helicopter Battalion, 82nd Combat Aviation Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division participates in fundraising events approximately twice a year and some Soldiers also volunteer together every other month.
This year, after Thanksgiving, 1st Lt. Kristin Glaeser, 2nd AHB, 82nd CAB, 82nd Abn. Div. began to develop the idea of setting up a collection to help shelter animals during the holiday season.
“I did want to do a fundraiser with the company, … and I wanted to do something a little different, and I know animal shelters, especially this time of year, need a lot of stuff,” said Glaeser.
Glaeser, Capt. Rory Ellsworth and 1st Sgt. Jackie Zerby, 2nd AHB, 82nd CAB, 82nd Abn. Div., packed up three weeks’ worth of collections, filling the bed of a truck and the back of a minivan, and dropped items off at Cumberland County Animal Control, Friday.
“We don’t usually get a big load like that. We usually get a few (donations) here and there and we try to stockpile it,” said Amanda Organ, shelter attendant, CCAC.
According to Organ, the shelter uses nearly half of a 50-gallon trash can full of food per day to feed the animals in its care.
Glaeser, Ellsworth and Zerby are all animal lovers.
“I just love animals in general. I just love all animals. If they had lizards here, I would have (fund)raised lizard food,” said Ellsworth.
