In honor of Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month, Fort Bragg has created a list of events to raise awareness and show support.
At the common area in the Pope Army Airfield Shoppette, a SAAPM Awareness Giveaway was held on April 2.
Elenah Kelly, a sexual assault prevention and response victim advocate, and Karen Smith, a sexual assault response coordinator, set up a table and a spinning wheel to engage and educate the Fort Bragg community about sexual assault.
Passersby were invited to spin the wheel then Kelly or Smith asked a question such as, “How do you define a healthy relationship?”
The questions were open ended — designed to build a dialogue about the important issues and topics relating the sexual assault.
“These questions are about prevention and awareness,” said Kelly.
Their open-ended questions, once answered, helped them to educate Fort Bragg community members about the issue of sexual assault.
“As we are spinning this wheel most of the questions are out about response they are about prevention,” Kelly explained.
Offered for participation were a slew of items to be won, including but not limited to gym towels and key chains. On each item was marked with “Pope AAF (910) 349-SARC, DoD SAFE HELPLINE: 877-995-5247.”
Those are the numbers a Fort Bragg community member can call in the event of a sexual assault; the numbers to find help should they need it.
