Martha “Maggie” Raye was an actress and comedian who worked with the USO during WWII, Korea and Vietnam. Though not a nurse officially, she used her nurse’s aide training to assist the wounded during Vietnam and would often travel to more remote outposts where other celebrities weren’t allowed. For her work with the military, she received her Green Beret and title of Lieutenant Colonel from President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1966. She was also awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Bill Clinton in 1993. A year after receiving a medal, she died of pneumonia at the age of 78. She was buried at Fort Bragg Main Post Cemetery, with military honors.
