Park construction closes roads
Due to the start of construction on Veterans Park and the park’s visitors center, Walter Street and a portion of Hillsboro Street have been closed. Hillsboro Street is closed from the Airborne and Special Operations Museum parking area driveway to the Rowan Street bridge ramp. The ASOM parking areas can be accessed from Hillsboro Street by turning off Hay Street.
Erosion control measures are being put in place and the park area, bordered by Bragg Boulevard and Walter and Hillsboro streets, will be fenced. Updates on road closures and construction progress will continue through the next 10 months.
Other portions of Phase I are meeting deadlines for completion. Freedom Trail is nearing completion, running from Freedom Memorial Park to Walter Street, along Bragg Boulevard. The connector walk from the ASOM to Walter Street (and the future entrance to the park) is completed. The park will open July 4, 2011.
Smith Lake Murchison Road entrance open
In an effort to make Smith Lake Recreation Area access more convenient for our customers, the entry road off of Murchison Road/Highway 210 to Smith Lake recreation area and Army Travel Campground re-opened Aug. 13 for all vehicular traffic.
Recreational vehicles or towed travel-trailer traffic is still strongly advised to use the alternate route onto Smith Lake Road via Honeycutt Road to avoid the steep incline crossing the rail road tracks at Murchison Road/Highway 210.
Point of contact at Family, Morale, Welfare and Recreation for this opening is Sabina Bryant, 396-7531/1533
