Colonel Steven Brewster

Womack Army Medical Center

Fort Bragg, North Carolina 28307

Dear Col. Brewster:

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the dedication of the Fort Bragg Fisher House. Congratulations!

On Aug. 13, 1993, my late grand uncle Zachary, with his wife Elizabeth, joined then Lt. Gen. Henry Hugh Shelton, commander XVIII Airborne Corps and Fort Bragg, in dedicating the ninth Fisher House.

Twenty years later, we are about to start building a replacement house - one with larger capacity, completely handicapped accessible, and within a short walking distance of Womack Army Medical Center.

No one, to include Zachary and Elizabeth, could have imagined the challenges faced by our nationís servicemen and women and their Families in the 20 years since your Fisher House opened its doors.

Twenty years after your dedication, there are now 61 Fisher Houses, and they have provided more than five million nights of lodging to military and veteransí Families.

Fort Bragg has the largest population of any Army installation in the world and your Fisher House has had as its occupants many of the finest Soldiers in our armed forces and their Families, as they undergo treatment at Womack Army Medical Center.

We have been a nation at war for 12 years and during that time, your Fisher House has provided a comfortable, caring environment for hundreds of Families of those wounded or injured on the battlefields of Afghanistan and Iraq. The value of a patient being able to have his or her Family so close while receiving medical care is priceless.

The Fisher family, and the trustees and staff of Fisher House Foundation, are honored to have played a part in the recovery of these heroes.

We are humbled by their selfless service and we recognize the importance of having oneís Family close by when recovering from injuries, illness, or disease.

We thank you and your predecessors, who as commanders of Womack Army Medical Center, have assumed the responsibility to operate and maintain the Fort Bragg Fisher House, just as we thank the entire Fort Bragg on and off post communities for their support in making these first 20 years a success. You have truly helped to keep Zachary and Elizabethís dream alive.

We look forward to building and opening of your new Fisher House and the years ahead.

God bless our nationís servicemen and women, their Families, and our nation.

With heartfelt gratitude,

Kenneth Fisher
