The Girls on the Run and Girls on Track programs are coming to Fort Bragg.
GOTR is an afterschool program that encourages healthy lifestyles through running for girls in grades 3 to 5. GOT does the same, but is designed for girls in grades 6 to 8.
Registration is now ongoing through Sept. 5 for GOTR and GOT, said Sue Fletcher, program director, YMCA of the Sandhills.
The 10-week sessions will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays, at Hedrick Stadium, at 3:45 p.m., with the first session starting Sept. 8.
The programs teach life skills such as how to deal with peer pressure, developing a positive body image, and nutrition, in addition to preparing girls to run a 5K at the end of training.
“We’re giving these girls tools that’s going to last their lifetime. We talk about having negative feelings and choosing not to have those feelings. It’s an amazing program that really builds the girls up,” said Fletcher who is excited to have the program at Fort Bragg.
“The Army culture just wants healthy kids, so I think this is ideal for an Army post.”
Cherie Bortnick, branch executive director, Armed Services YMCA, agreed.
“A healthy lifestyle in youth increases the chances for a good quality of life as an adult,” Bortnick said. “More importantly, it provides the elements for good mental and physical fitness during the growth stage.”
Additionally, the goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness, she said.
Registration for GOTR and GOT is $49 for YMCA members and $99 for non-members, but financial assistance is available, Fletcher said.
With sessions set to begin Sept. 8, at Hedrick Stadium, registration will close Sept. 5, and will resume in February for those who missed the fall session, Fletcher said. Volunteer coaches are needed.
This year’s culminating 5K will be the YMCA Turkey Trot 5K, held at Hope Mills track, Nov. 14. Early registration will be $20. Two weeks out, late registration cost $25.
