Tricare has made several updates on their dental coverage for retiree beneficiaries, which will take effect on Jan. 1, 2019.

Beneficiaries will have the opportunity to enroll in a new plan: Federal Employees Dental and Vision Insurance Plan (FEDVIP). The current program Tricare Retiree Dental Program (TRDP) will end Dec. 31 and those on the current plan will not be automatically transferred onto the new policy.

Open season to enroll in FEDVIP is Nov. 12 to Dec. 10. Beneficiaries must decide if they want to join the new plan during that period. Those who do not enroll in FEDVIP during the enrollment season cannot get on the new plan and will be without dental or vision coverage until the next open season, which will be in November 2019. During that time, all dental benefits will cease to exist.

According to JoAnna Elliot, the Civilian Human Resources Division (CHRD) chief at U.S. Army Special Operations Command, Tricare retiree beneficiaries might have more coverage when they enroll in FEDVIP.

“They can have a vision plan and have the opportunity to get a pair of glasses,” Elliot said.

For those interested in learning more about FEDVIP and other Tricare retiree benefits, Janet Benton, a CHRD specialist, said there will be a Benefits Fair open to military retirees and their spouses Nov. 5 at the John F. Kennedy Auditorium.

Matthew Canavan from Federal Long Term Care Partners will be the event speaker. He will address questions, discuss options and talk about the process for making elections regarding FEDVIP open season at 10 a.m.
