When U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) opened a recruiting office at Fort Bragg in August 2018, the recruiters knew they would impact transitioning Soldiers, but they never anticipated an overwhelming response they received.

During the first 45 days the office was open, CBP recruiters contacted more than 1,200 applicants through briefings and individual appointments, according to Bob Graczyk, a supervisory customs and border protection officer. The office has now extended CBP’s stay and will remain at the installation until Dec. 20.

“Many of our service members were unfamiliar with the many career opportunities that CBP has to offer our transitional service members,” Graczyk said. “Our veterans gain valuable knowledge, skills and abilities while serving our country in our military. Because of the structure, sound judgment and teamwork they acquired, they are valuable assets to continue serving our country. They also can come to U.S. Customs and Border Protection at a higher rate of pay and a shorter hiring process because of their service.”

Veterans make approximately 28 percent of CBP’s workforce, and disabled veterans make approximately 6 percent. Veterans are also afforded an expedited application process, often getting hired in less than a year.

CBP opened at Fort Bragg as part of a Special Emphasis Recruitment Team, focusing on recruiting transitioning service members through event-based outreach.

While one-on-one contact works for many people, Graczyk also encourages interested service members to visit www.CBP.Gov/applynow, or download the “CBP Jobs” app to their phones.

“This will assist with the application process because it has resources like study guides, videos and other assistance for the applicant,” he said. “This will track your progress through the hiring process.”

The CBP recruitment office is located in building 3-1318, 2801 Old Stable Lane on Fort Bragg, and is open 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Two-hour briefings are conducted each Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and spouse briefings are conducted at the Army Community Service Employment Readiness Programs Center.
